CPS Exercise - Tactical Answer

Continued from the CPS exercise: Tactical Problem.

A Display of the Fire Potential

Prediction:

If the fire gets to the indicated positions in the afternoon it will go into alignment and make runs to the North and Northeast as displayed.

The fire perimeter will reach two points where it can go into alignment with wind, slope and in the afternoon, solar preheat .

This perimeter attack has a 1100 time tag: If the fire can't be stopped before it gets to these positions of alignment, then the direct tactics need to be stopped on the N perimeter. They are unsafe for personnel beginning at 1100 hours.

Situation:
The fire has been steadily backing overnight with 1-foot flame lengths. Fuel is mixed brush and some scattered pine timber. Some of the brush is under-burned and the canopy is intact. It is warm and dry. The fire is telling me it will continue burning.

Type of Fire:
The fire is a topography fire and slope is the dominant force on the fire.

Logic:
If it continues to spread it will eventually change from a backing fire to a fire that is in alignment with wind, slope and depending on the time of day, solar preheated and dried fuels.

Answers

  1. How long and where will that fire behavior continue?

Until the dominate force changes and/or force alignments change.

  2. There are 3 crews on the fireline making a direct attack. The lines are not holding rolling material and need constant surveillance. Describe how long this tactic is appropriate.

There is a need to recognize that a change is needed to something that works. The tactic will fail unless more resources are added.

The fire will grow in intensity beyond thresholds of control at indicated points.

  3. Find the track where the fire has high potential for the afternoon hours.

    See Red Lines.

  4. The plan of action:

    Time Tag the tactic.

As soon as it is apparent that the fire will get to a point that is likely to result in relocation of the fire to a position of alignment with the slope, evacuate all personnel from the north perimeter.

Fight the fire while it is out of alignment. Determine where the fire will drop within the thresholds of control again. Order resources and stage them for that event.
